A Focus on the Children
“Homeless children have delayed development at a rate four times the national average, and experience more depression, increased anxiety, behavioral problems and health problems.” - National Center on Family Homelessness
The stress of homelessness is particularly difficult for children who have fewer coping skills and rely on caregivers for support. All three of our programs include an effective and innovative School Engagement Model, which is employed to ensure that our children receive the counseling and resources that they need. Child therapy is a critical component to assisting with the transition to self-sufficiency. Every parent wants to provide and protect for their child, instilling optimism and hope into their lives in even the most dire of situations.
We u
nderstand the value of both education and time with family, and with the permission of the parents we provide a licensed therapist to assist in succeeding in both of these areas. Safe Haven’s licensed therapist works with a child’s teachers to provide counseling sessions at their school. In 2011 (from January to June), the SHFS Clinical Therapist conducted 620 counseling session, 200 of those were with children in school sessions.
Seventy to eighty percent of parents opt to continue therapy sessions for their children after they have moved to a transitional or a rapid re-housing program.
