Our theme for this issue is “gratitude.” We are thankful for all those who participated in and donated to our Widen Our Welcome campaign. We are grateful to our board, staff, volunteers, sponsors and community partners. At home in our newly expanded/renovated building, our journey to empower homeless families with children to self-sufficiency continues through expanding programs, partnerships and services. Please join us in this journey with a donation. You can use the enclosed envelope or make a donation online: www.safehaven.org. Thank you for your continued support!

Giving Thanks to Our Dedicated Staff
by Joyce Lavery, Executive Director & CEO

staff group shot for front coverThis Thanksgiving, I give a special thanks to the staff of Safe Haven. Often not thanked enough, staff at Safe Haven do their work in a sometimes stressful environment as they triage homeless families through some unimaginable traumas and situations. This staff shows up to work despite their fatigue and sleepless nights all while taking care of their own families and children, working on new academic degrees and continuing education to stay on top of their game, and demonstrate complete dedication to the work and mission of Safe Haven. Gratitude for Our Volunteers
by Stefanie Tinnell, Volunteer Coordinator

vol picGratitude is defined in the dictionary as, “The state of being grateful; thankfulness.” We couldn’t say it better. At Safe Haven we are in a “state of being grateful.” We are proud to be a part of this organization and to work with such a high caliber of volunteers. As our organization grows, our volunteer program grows with it. With volunteers like you, we grow stronger and in a spirit of excellence. (Read more…)

Ensuring Educational Opportunities for Children at Safe Haven

The time children spend with us at Safe Haven should be seen as a time to empower children, rather than simply a place of transition. (Read more…)

Reflection and Gratitude on Five Years of Service
Jennifer Reason, Program Service Director

jennifer reasonSeptember 15, 2013 marked my five year anniversary at Safe Haven.  Since then I’ve been thinking about all the things that have happened in the last five years, and it truly is amazing how far Safe Haven has come in such a short period of time. During that time, there have been lots of highs and lows.  There are challenges like difficult situations with clients and having to turn some families away due to lack of capacity (to name just a few). And there are incredible successes, like moving hundreds of people into housing, kids going to college, parents maintaining jobs and families buying homes. (Read more…)
