BANK OF AMERICA NEIGHBORHOOD BUILDER LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

joyce-ceo- boatraining picAs announced at the end of 2015, Safe Haven is this year’s Bank of America Neighborhood Builder for Nashville. In addition to the $200,000 unrestricted grant to build capacity, I along with one staff member, named our Emerging Leader (Rachael Wilkins), have access to world-class leadership training to expand our own capacity to be effective and visionary leaders at the forefront of solving community problems. 2016 HERO AWARD RECOGNIZED AT DANCING FOR SAFE HAVEN EVENT

Mike and Sharon Dancing ChairsThe 7th Annual Dancing for Safe Haven event is April 16 at the Hilton Nashville Downtown. Each year, at this event, we recognize the Safe Haven Family Shelter Hero Awardee. The Hero Award honors a volunteer who has exhibited extraordinary leadership, vision and dedication. This year we will honor the life and work of Mike Pigott (1954-2015). His leadership, advocacy and passion for Safe Haven is a legacy for which we are immensely grateful. (Read more…)

VOLUNTEERS EMPOWER KIDS AT SAFE HAVEN TO “BE KIDS”

IMG_1119April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, but that is EVERY month at Safe Haven! Volunteers are essential to the mission and work of Safe Haven Family Shelter. We count on them to prepare meals, help at events and more. Volunteers play an especially essential role in our children’s program. We recently nominated two of our volunteers, a mother-daughter team, for the Mary Catherine Strobel Awards through Hands on Nashville. These awards recognize Middle Tennessee volunteers who give their time and talents to improve the community. Whether or not they win in the direct service category, we wanted to share a little about the amazing volunteer role that Susie and Sammi Garland play at Safe Haven. (Read more…)

A FAMILY REUNION

family reunion 1Last month, Safe Haven and Catholic Charities hosted a Family Reunion for past and present clients. It had many of the trappings of a classic family get together, from yard games, basketball, arts & crafts to home cooked greens, plenty of crock pots and goofy uncle jokes. Over lunch families that hadn’t seen each other in months as well as those meeting for the first time swapped stories and shared videos of children’s school performances while giggles and basketballs could be heard from the gym. Afterwards the adults gathered with staff to discuss where clients are now and celebrate their success. (Read more…)

HOUSING PARTNERSHIPS

Safe Haven Family Shelter is proud to collaborate with community organizations and corporate partners in ways that make a positive impact. These partnerships are essential to the work we do, including housing families experiencing homelessness. Recently three organizations came together to help Safe Haven move a single mother of five into her own housing. (Read more…)

MOVERS FOR MOMS (March 24 to May 4)

MFM logo FINALTWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Nashville is hosting its annual Movers for Moms® collection drive to provide critical gifts for moms at Safe Haven Family Shelter. Your donation to Movers for Moms® helps mothers in need create a better life for themselves and their families. This year, Two Men and a Truck Nashville set a goal to to collect 2,000 necessity items for Safe Haven moms between March 24 and May 4! They will deliver the final collection to Safe Haven the weekend of Mother’s Day. Visit bit.ly/MoversforMoms to see needed items and find a drop off location.

LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER: April 30

listen to your motherListen To Your Mother is a national series of live readings by local writers giving Mother’s Day a microphone. The Nashville show is April 30 at TPAC and features local women reading their stories. Ten percent of ticket sales benefits Safe Haven Family Shelter. THE BIG PAYBACK: May 3

BigPayback_1The Big Payback is May 3rd. It is a community-wide, 24-hour online giving challenge hosted by The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. This charitable event helps area nonprofits raise much-needed dollars and bring awareness to pressing needs in our communities. We will be calling on you, our supporters, to help us raise money and awareness that day.
