Help fill ongoing needs at Safe Haven

Overnight: We staff the emergency shelter 365 days a year with an overnight volunteer who serves as a contact for residents and liaison to Safe Haven staff. Hours: 5:45 p.m.-6 a.m. Overnight volunteer is welcome and encouraged to dine with residents and will have a private room for sleeping.

Meal prep: Do you understand the importance of a family meal? So do we. Our volunteers prepare meals 365 days a year for 12-25 residents at a time. Meals can be prepared at home and brought in, or prepared in our industrial kitchen. We ask that they include an entrée, two vegetable dishes, dessert and drinks (milk for children and tea / juice / soda for adults). Residents dine from 6-7 p.m.

Weekends: We need volunteers for two shifts Saturdays and Sundays at our 3rd Avenue location. The shifts are: 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday. The weekend volunteer answers the shelter phone, handles minor administrative tasks and is a point of contact with the residents.

Donation Pick up:  Help us collect donated furniture and household items for transport back to the shelter. We schedule pick-ups on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Administrative: Two daily administrative shifts are filled by volunteers at the 3rd Avenue shelter: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Duties include answering the phones and greeting visitors.

Groups: We will post desired projects from time to time, or check in with us on our current needs. Don’t hesitate to share a project idea.

Scouts: We love all of our volunteers, but we especially love the Scouts! We can work with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts to find an appropriate and needed project.

Events: We always need volunteers to help us plan and carry off our signature events. Let us know if you would like to help with an event!

Computer Lab Helper: Love Microsoft Office?  Love teaching web browsing?  Want to help with research for homework?  This is the volunteer opportunity for you.

Childcare: Provide fun activities and childcare while parents attend Safe Haven classes. We need volunteers each weekday from about 7-8:30 p.m.

Family Mentoring: Journey Together is a new initiative at Safe Haven that matches an individual, family or group with a Safe Haven family as they make the transition from homelessness to lasting self-sufficiency.  Mentors share their experience, strength, and hope with a homeless family as they journey to a better life.
